Charlie Gogolak - K

Charlie Gogolak played for the Redskins from 1966-68, and the Patriots from 1970-72. He was the Redskins' 1st-round pick in 1966, the first time a team drafted a kicker in the 1st round.

He was the 2nd soccer-style kicker in the NFL (his older brother Pete being the first). The Gogolaks were from Hungary, and were both Ivy League alumni (Charlie from Princeton, and Pete from Cornell).
Charlie's best year was his rookie season, posting a career high 22 field goals and 41 extra points.

He was limited to 1 game in 1967, having been injured before game 2. The team tried using flanker John Love, safety Brig Owens, and linebacker Dick Absher in games 2 thru 6, and although they all scored extra points, they were a combined 2-for-10 in field goal attempts, with only Love scoring. The Redskins finally brought in a replacement kicker (Gene Mingo) starting with game 7.

After missing the 1969 season, Gogolak played 3 years for the Patriots.

Ken Kortas - DT

Ken Kortas was the Cardinals' #1 pick in 1964, and started 5 games as a rookie.
He was traded to the Steelers after the season for QB Terry Nofsinger. Kortas played for the Steelers for four seasons, and was a starting defensive tackle in '65, '67, and '68.

In 1967 he scored a touchdown on a recovered fumble. Although starting 38 games in his 4 seasons in the Steel City, Pittsburgh drafted DT Joe Greene in the first round of the 1969 draft, replacing Kortas.

In early September he was traded to the Saints for running back Don McCall, but was released a week later without playing a game.

The Bears picked him up, and he saw action in 3 games in his last season.

Don Brumm - DE

Don Brumm was the Cardinals' 1st-round pick in 1963, and was their starting right defensive end for his first 4 seasons.

After spending most of 1967 on the bench (making only 4 starts), he returned to the lineup in 1968, starting every game (this time at left end) and made his only Pro Bowl.

Brumm only played 4 games in 1969 but started them all, so I have to believe he missed the other 10 games due to injury.

From 1970-71, he played for the Eagles, appearing in 16 games over 2 seasons but only starting once.

He returned to the Cardinals for his final season (1972).

I first became aware of him during his time with the Eagles, which is probably when I bought this card (not having collected in 1969).
